I receive occasional queries for good open source project management and scheduling tools. As you probably know by now, our scheduling tool of choice for Fedora is TaskJuggler. TaskJuggler provides a great benefit to Fedora in its flexibility as a reporting tool and is a key driver behind the weekly schedule reminders.
Here is a list (in no particular order) of open source project management tools I’ve come across or have heard suggested by others. I can’t really attest to any of these being better than others, but hopefully it narrows down an initial Google search.
- TaskJuggler —http://www.taskjuggler.org
- Gantt Project–http://www.ganttproject.biz/
- project-open —http://www.project-open.com/
- phproject–http://www.phprojekt.com/index.php
- dotProject–http://www.dotproject.net/
- KPlato–http://www.koffice.org/kplato/
- Trac–http://trac.edgewall.org/
- OpenProj–http://openproj.org/
What others would you add to this list?

We have been using WorkforceTrack Project Management tool for more than one year. We chose this system because of its being multifunctional (Project Management, CRM, Accouting, and other 20+ business tools) Another reason was its flexible prices and available discounts for small and mid-sized organizations. If you are interested in this solution, you can get more information from official web-site http://www.workforcetrack.com

Why did you mentioned just open source applications and not freeware as well? It does not matter which type it is as long as it helps you and while both are free…

I mentioned open source applications because that is the environment I work in and I trust them more. They also tend to have larger community around them. What freeware applications would you suggest?

jxProject for example but I guess that there are many more…
You might have a point regarding the community but this is valid for frameworks, components, etc. and not for final products that are being used by end users. I mean what project manager would try to understand and do something with the code of GanttProject let’s say? This is madness… that project manager does not even know how to write a code.
You will say that the support might be better… OK this might be true but still this is not a reason to ignore freeware.

Emacs’ Org Mode is a different style, but fits all the requirements of project management (and much more). I use Org Mode for daily tasks and some projects, but my biggest project uses Trac.

I haven’t used it myself, but I’ve got good references:

Planner http://live.gnome.org/Planner
It doesn’t do resource leveling but it is very easy and pleasant to use.

Hi John, I’m the Product Mgr for OpenProj and our other PPM tools at Serena Software. I live just down the street from Jes Keating who I’m sure you know working on Fedora. Obviously, I have my bias for which is the best tool in your list above. Thanks for the post as I’m checking out some of the other open source project management tools.
Cheers,
Greg
