I received a letter from Comcast shortly before Christmas explaining that they were tripling my internet speed without changing the price. The link below is really interesting and confirmed my suspicion that Comcast didn’t triple my internet speed simply because they were feeling generous. I am happy for the change, however I am hearing reports in my area of people having problems with Vonage since the change.

My hunch too is that Comcast was getting squeezed by the DSL and FIOS providers and this was a way to remain competitive. I admire the creativity of this solution as it does seem to be a win for most people. Overall the only time I see the speed increase is when I download a very large file. Most websites and download sites are not that much faster and seem more limited by the speed of the server I’m connecting to rather than Comcast. Running speedtest I can peg the meters 🙂
