Who’s on Your Fridge by Peter Bregman

In fact, we seem to rarely miss an opportunity to be disappointed. We focus on what people are doing wrong, on their weaknesses and shortcomings. We gossip and complain. We get frustrated and passive aggressive. We find ourselves constantly surprised by the flaws of our colleagues: How could he/she/they do that?

What if, instead — or at least in addition — we chose not to miss an opportunity to be inspired? If we gossiped about things people did that energized us without fixating on the things that disappointed us? If we looked for sparks that ignited our enthusiasm and incited our goodwill? And if we allowed those sparks to light our fires of passion?

Yes, what if?

An Unforgettable Act of Kindness by Tess Marshall–It’s easy for me to come up with reasons why it isn’t my place to help or get involved.  It’s that fear of doing it wrong or looking silly–vulnerability.  I want to change that.

John Mayer 2011 Clinic – “Manage the Temptation to Publish Yourself” by Erice at Berklee Blogs quoting John Mayer

Anybody who tells you to have a fall back plan are people who had a fallback plan, didn’t follow their dreams, and don’t want you to either.

I like the guts behind this thought.   Context also matters.

The Truth About Shipping by Seth Godin

The paradox of our time is that the instincts that kept us safe in the day of the saber tooth tiger and General Motors are precisely the instincts that will turn us into road kill in a faster than fast internet-fueled era.

I’m more and more convinced that companies that do not adopt more agile methods of product development, with more frequent, iterative releases, will be left behind.

Discipline is an illusion; Motivate yourself instead by Leo Babauta

If you think you don’t have discipline, you don’t need it. What you need is to commit to your goal or habit and fully motivate yourself.

I like the thought that discipline isn’t a brute force technique to success.  It’s more about finding small ways to set yourself up for success.  Most forced things don’t turn out very well anyway.

How (and why) to Stop Multitasking by Peter Bregman– “Research shows that heavy multitaskers are less competent at doing several things at once than light multitaskers. In other words, in contrast to almost everything else in your life, the more you multitask, the worse you are at it. Practice, in this case, works against you…. I lost nothing by not multitasking.  No projects were left unfinished. No one became frustrated with me for not answering a call or failing to return an email the second I received it.”

How (and When) to Motivate Yourself by Peter Bregman– “We waste a lot of time, energy, and focus second-guessing ourselves. Am I doing the right work? Is this project worthwhile? Is this employee going to work out? That moment-by-moment deliberation is a distraction at best and sabotage at worst. If you keep asking yourself whether a project is worth working on, you’ll reduce your effort on that project — who wants to spend time on something that might fail? — and doom its success.”

Never Hurts to Ask by Darren Hardy–I was surprised by the similarity in the comments of Hardy’s post and Peter Bregman’s post Live Life as an Experiment. Several people thought the idea was to “get away with as much as you can.”  I see value in “asking.” I also see value in not squeezing the last penny out of every transaction.

Facebook Fatigue by Tom Purcell– “When my father wants to communicate, he approaches other human beings, usually my mother, and uses his voice. Sometimes he uses facial expressions to emphasize a point.”

What Would You Do If You Knew You Would Not Fail? by Chris Guillebeau– “Instead of thinking about what you would do if you knew you wouldn’t fail, maybe a better question is… What’s truly worth doing, whether you fail or succeed?

How to Not Really Win An Argument by Donald Miller–I think the argumentative tone on the Fedora mailing lists has gotten better.  Here are some ideas to go further.

The Beauty of Damaged Goods by Carolyn Campbell– “Ah, this is the true work; building a courageous life; by daring to fail again; living the full truth you know to be.”

Broken Meetings (and how you can fix them) by Merlin Mann– “Every meeting needs a parent… Every bus needs a driver… Every meeting needs a purpose.”

5 Time Zone Tools by Simon Mackie–Always handy when you’re trying to convert to UTC or accommodate someone in another time zone.

Avoiding Momentum by Seth Godin–Sometimes it’s better not to start in case things work out too well.

Practical Tips for Dealing with Haters by Tim Ferris–Some good ideas and reminders for dealing with people that don’t agree with you or might not like you. I loved the tattoo stunt.

How Bad Habits Create Boring Stories by Donald Miller–I’ve often wondered this about coffee–if the euphoric, “I can conquer the world” caffeine high is really worth it. Could it be masking or covering up things I’m not dealing with or should take action on?

What Steve Jobs Learned in the Wilderness by Randall Stross–Failure is one of the keys to success.

Why I Returned My iPad by Peter Bregman–This article confirmed that it wasn’t the right time for me to buy an iPad and the last paragraph got me all misty-eyed.

Growing Interest in Farmer’s Markets by Cooking Up a Story–Since 1994 the number of farmer’s markets in the United States has grown every year.

White Space by Robin Johnson-Simpson–Looking forward to a week of white space at a cabin on a lake without the internet or cell coverage.

How to Not Really Win an Argument by Donald Miller–Excellent advice for some of the “discussions” on the Fedora development list.

How and When to Motivate Yourself by Peter Bregman–”What’s important is that your moment of choice is when you are in the right state of mind — when you need the least willpower — to make the best decision.”

4 Ways Not to be a Doormat by Amber Singleton Riviere–Whether you have your own business, work for someone else, or invest your time in an open source project, these are great points to keep in mind.

Competition by Seth Godin–Just because someone is already doing it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it too.

The Fear Tax by Seth Godin–Are we shipping Fedora or are we focusing on just in case scenarios like 100% elected governance bodies?

Five Principles of Civil Dialogue by Donald Miller–I really like point #4:  Every person has sovereignty and a right to their beliefs.  To which I’d add, “regardless of what they are or how much I might disagree with them.”

12 Things Good Bosses Believe by Robert I. Sutton–Even if you aren’t a people manager, these are still great things to think about.

7 Discipline-builders for Remote Workers by Georgina Laidlaw–Working from home is a lot harder than conference calls in your pajamas and getting to see your family all the time.

Blogging 101: Take a Tip from Newswriting with the Five W’s by Joe Brockmeier–Great reminder to always provide context even if you assume your audience knows.  Not everyone knows what the Fedora Project is.

I Don’t Feel Like it by Seth Godin–I recently had the same thought.  You can kill a couple of hours starting your day in search of the right feeling or you can force yourself to jump in and start working on something icky and let the feelings come later!

A Two Step Plan for Changing by Peter Bregman–A very interesting combination of topics: change, texting, death, and arguments.

Not For Me by Seth Godin–Another approach to saying “that will never work” to a new idea on a Fedora mailing list.

How to Manage Your Boss When Working Remotely by Dawn Foster–Great ideas for fostering better communication and managing a good connection with your boss when you are a remote worker.

Want to Get to Know Somebody? Understand Their Story by Donald Miller–It is so easy to assume you already know what you need or want to know about another person.  Usually there is far more there and you only have to ask to find out.

Five Resonations

Leaping Again and Again Until We Get it Right by Colleen Wainwright–The best path out of our gridlock is to “Leap Again” even if it is a leap into failure.  I love Colleen’s writing style and poetry.

Attention as a Currency and Noise by Chris Brogran–Time is limited.  Make sure you are spending it on the right things.  The right things can be deceiving.

Writing professionally: Do you really want to? by Joe Brockmeier–Interesting distinction between “needing” to write versus “wanting” to.

Tips For Stress Free Travel by Chris Guillebeau–If a little bit of money can solve your problem, it isn’t a big problem.  Thinking about how I could have made so many trips better by spending $20 for a cab or $5 for a bottle of water.

It’s Better Than TV by Seth Godin–I watch very little TV.  Another reason to add to Seth’s list is the amount of money saved each month by not paying for cable.  Maybe as much or as little as $1,000 a year.

Today’s Resonations

I’m trying something new which is to occasionally make a post of five links to articles I’ve read or podcasts I’ve listened to that resonated with me.  Here is the first batch:

  • Soul of a New Business by Chris Brogan–It doesn’t have to be a pure “business,” it could be an open source project or personal initiative.  Read the article and substitute Fedora for “Business.” Be real.  Be authentic.
